Midday

Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen in "shores, horizons, voyages", translated from portuguese by Rui Cascais Parada

Midday. A corner of empty beach.
The sun upon high, deep, huge, open,
Cleared the sky of any god.
Light falls implacable as a punishment.
There are no ghosts or souls,
And the sea immense, solitary and ancient,
Seems to applaud.
