GENEVA — Geneva’s counterculture may not be dead, but it is looking distinctly bruised.The city, known internationally for diplomacy, private banking, watches and highbrow culture, was for much of the last decade a hub for squatters, anarchists, electronic music and impromptu theater.

But recent years have not been kind to the alternative-culture scene.

“Geneva is moping,” Le Temps newspaper wrote in an article late last year. “It’s a town closed in on itself, it’s stopped dreaming.”

The malaise has its roots in an official clampdown on numerous squatter spaces in 2007 and ’08 that was led by Daniel Zappelli, the city’s chief prosecutor, or district attorney, from the center-right Liberal Party. For public health and similar reasons, other spots have closed since. Added to the city’s high rents, strict zoning laws for former industrial sites and the success of recently opened upscale private bars and clubs, the closures have severely curtailed choices for those on a limited budget.

“What happened with the closure of the squats was akin to a cultural brain drain,” said Albane Schlechten, who represents a union of independent cultural associations.

The alternative spots — notably La Tour and Rhino — nurtured workshops, bars, theaters and clubs, giving rise to groups like Cave 12, whose electronic sound attracted visitors from as far afield as Japan, and hip hangouts like l’escobar. Artamis, a sprawling, informal cultural center housed the Théâtre du Galpon, a cinema and an art gallery, as well as bars and spaces for concerts; upscale apartments are among plans for the site. All of the venues are now closed.

The changes have put increasing pressure on Geneva’s last grunge-style culture center, L’Usine , on a former industrial site on the banks of the Rhone.

William Riceputi, 36, a teacher who helps to organize arts shows, screenings and gigs for new bands, said: “Many people have been priced out of culture. Young people are getting bored. There’s more frustration.”

Morning arrives with audacity. Anguish and light, spilling with disdain over anonymous objects. Dreams fading so quickly that I forget to write them down again. I stare at the notebook and try some words:

I decide to follow my shadow back into the night, hoping that uncounciousness will feed my pen. To my surprise, darkness is a blaze. It could be the moon or just open shutters.
I reach my notebook and write, believing that I am actually writing on my notebook:

I don't seem to be getting too far so I open my eyes. There are two moons in the sky. Could be two bulbs on a ceiling but I swear it is two moons. One of them tells me there is no such thing as two moons. I don't believe her because moons cannot be trusted. I reach for my notebook and write:

"never trust a moon you have never seen before"

and then morning arrives.

A day after Standard and Poor's slashed the debt rating on Greek bonds to junk status, Zeus held a press conference in which he admitted that things were getting out of hand under the rule of his son, Hermes.

Hermes is popularly known as the messenger god with the winged hat, but he is also the god of thieves. He holds the record as youngest felon in history, thanks to his remarkable heist of a herd of sacred cattle from elder sibling Apollo mere hours after he was born.

"We've been taking turns at the helm, you see; all part of this family counseling we've been going through," Zeus said while toying with a small lightning bolt in his left hand.

"Things were pretty good under Hephaestus," Zeus said, "got the country through the beginning of the Industrial Age quite nicely there. And Athena did all right in establishing national autonomy back in the 1830s. But Hermes... Hermes is another story entirely. I'm still not sure why I agreed to this in the first place."

Some people have a life project. This is it: take something immaterial and lock it in an Euclidean space. Repeat the process every day until it makes sense. Repeat it until infinity becomes bidimensional and you can frame it in your own frame of inhibitions. Repeat it until you're obssessed with the process itself and infinity is just a means and not the goal. It is the process that matters. This is the project. This is the project and it's absurd.

Numa cidade tem que haver granito. Tem que haver esse rumor quase imperceptível da pedra ancestral. Tem que haver homens que caminhem descalços sobre matéria inerte. Tem que haver comunhão da carne com o elemento como na transmutação dos corpos.

(na alquimia se urdem as mais intricadas aspirações de um citadino).

E no entanto tudo é tão simples de explicar como o restolhar das águas numa manhã fria de Outono à beira rio.

Numa cidade tem que haver pontes. Tem que haver uma árvore que contenha uma inscrição enigmática sobre o amor. Tem que haver jornais abertos sobre um banco de jardim.

E no entanto no café matinal só se lêem as letras gordas.

Uma cidade tem corpos diáfanos que desfilam na rua em trajectórias quase paralelas, que roçam as paredes numa sensualidade geológica. Corpos rudemente lapidados.

E no entanto uma cidade de pedra é feita de amores sedimentares.

Damn it ! it's monday again ! we've been counting the hours but in the meanwhile years have gone by and truth remained unbeaten in its territory. There are doubts: sure! There are hesitations. But inevitability dug trenches ahead of us: we are walking in spiral to something monstrous. We search comfort on centrifugal forces.

We want an end: answers, a centre, transcendence, metaphysics, all those absurd things which are no more than electric pulses on a no-less-absurd brain. We perpetuate ourselves and perpetuate the questions. Then come the philosophers and question the questions. Then come the sociologists and politicians and those that have learned from history and apply their lessons to experimentalism. And then experimentalism becomes history itself and we all learn from it.

No One Knows About Persian Cats

Special Jury Prize in the "Un Certain Regard" section at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, this is a film I strongly recommend.

From Iranian director Bahman Ghobad, the film portrays Tehran as a city with a vibrant underground indie rock scene (in a mixed fiction/ documentary format), and features a number of bands, playing from metal to rap, on a musical guided tour lead by the duo Negar and Ashkan from the band "Take It Easy Hospital".

The band asked for asylum in the UK last August and is living in London ever since.

In Geneva, the film is presently showing in the Scala cinemas. I Leave you with a teaser.

Inácio não tinha relógio, por isso deixou crescer a barba. Havia entre os seus colegas de trabalho quem duvidasse que uma barba pudesse substituir um relógio. Os funcionários são criaturas avessas às pilosidades preferindo uma boa dose de cepticismo e um relógio de quartzo. Mas Inácio não se intimidou. E a dita cuja foi crescendo desavergonhadamente ao ritmo de um centímetro e meio por dia útil.

Era uma barba monstruosa. Possuia uma dinâmica vida interior que se desenvolvia no sentido dos infinitos espaços inter ministeriais. Movia-se com destreza nesse jogo de minúcias temporais, animada de secretas intenções.

Perante o assombro geral, a barba ganhava terreno na repartição. Já tinha chegado ao armário das circulares administrativas e dos procedimentos anexos e ameaçava agora sem qualquer pudor a mesa dos formulários urgentes e dos requerimentos por intermédio de terceiros.

Esta prodigalidade começava a preocupar o Sr. Bonifácio que se ocupava das licenças e alvarás e que tinha visto desaparecer, sob a barba de Inácio, dois dossiers carregadinhos de processos em apreciação.

Várias barbearias, dois cabeleireiros unisexo e uma loja de tesouras ficariam assim irremediavelmente arruinados.

Coincidência ? não para o Sr. Bonifácio, que mantinha a barba debaixo de olho durante o horário legal de trabalho. Sem embargo, fazia cinco minutos de pausa para café de manhã e dez minutos à tarde, onde aproveitava para ler o jornal do ministério, inteirando-se assim dos pormenores mais escabrosos que animavam a vida da direcção geral de assuntos internos.

Um dia os acontecimentos tomaram um rumo inesperado. Bonifácio reparou que a barba crescia assincronamente em horas de ponta. A situação era inaceitável. Os funcionários inquietavam-se e corriam em todas as direcções. Adiantavam relógios na esperança de conter essa força desmedida.

Tinham convicções. Sabiam os horários de cor, com as suas tabelas e anexos. Confiavam na usura. Alicerçavam a sua vida no hábito lentamente acumulado. E agora a barba.

Inácio não se comovia. Vivia no alheamento das sombras.

Na sua loucura preenchia impressos.

As hierarquias rapidamente decretaram a nova situação como perfeitamente enquadrada pelas regras em vigor, o que tranquilizou chefes e sub chefes que se apressaram a espalhar a notícia. Então começou a crescer na repartição um clima de pubescência generalizada. Abandonava-se o relógio em troca de um bigodinho. Rasgavam-se calendários deixando crescer a pêra. Até as senhoras deixaram de depilar as axilas.

Um dia Inácio não veio trabalhar. E toda essa gente se viu entregue à sua orfandade. Olharam para os seus bigodes rídiculos e pêras e axilas e odiaram-se muito. Era um ódio fecundo. E esse fel aprimorava instintos que conduzem inevitavelmente à morte.

O tempo era escasso, a morte urgia e Bonifácio passava alvarás.

Os últimos segundos sairam dos relógios com gravidade. E depois o silêncio.

No dia a seguir a repartição não abriu. Culpou-se o governo e as instituições. Fizeram-se petições, greves de fome, manifestações.

Entretanto numa repartição vizinha Jesualdo comprou um chapéu de feltro por razões desconhecidas, provocando o espanto geral.

A wish for a dishwashing machine

I remember almost losing conciousness as I was reaching 5800m just after Gilman's point. As I advanced, sleepwalking, all I wished for was a clear view of the summit.

I remember crossing the M'Goun gorges, my legs immersed in the cold water of the M'Goun river. After a long day walking, all I wished for was my sleeping bag and a starry sky.

I remember sleeping under a tree, in the middle of the Sahara desert (yes, a tree!). I could see the heat waves distorting the landscape as I lifted my head from my mattress. All I wished for was a soft breeze.

I remember sitting above Kumbu glacier, at about 5200m. My head aching with the altitude, my hands freezing with the glacial wind. All I wished for was to stay there a bit longer.

Now I am standing here, in front of this pile of dirty dishes, and all I can wish for is a bloody dishwashing machine...
