A desordem estuporada da vida

Excerto retirado de "Estilo" in "Os passos em volta", Herberto Helder

— Se eu quisesse, enlouquecia. Sei uma quantidade de histórias terríveis. Vi muita coisa, contaram-me casos extraordinários, eu próprio...

Faço-me entender? Percebe? Uma dessas abstracções que servem para tudo.

the music in my head

Home, let me come Home
Home is whenever I'm with you
Home, yes I am Home
Home is wherever I'm with you

I follow you into the park,
thru the jungle thru the dark
Girl aint never loved one like you
Moats and boats and Waterfalls,
Alleyways and payphone calls
I been everywhere with you

Laugh until we think we'll die,
barefoot on a summer night
never could be sweeter than with you

Home, let me come Home
Home is whenever I'm with you
Home, yes I am Home
Home is wherever I'm with you

o meu caderno encarnado

(texto de O Coxo)

trago comigo

enquanto no horizonte barcos e sóis mentiam
candidamente
e o tempo construía um imenso fóssil
de palavras sedimentares

trago às vezes comigo a involuntária
vontade de mentir
(como os barcos e os sóis)
sobre a necessidade de viver o crepúsculo
pelo interior das veias

à noite escrevo o meu próprio sangue
nos lençóis
ou então sufoco no sobressalto da cor
e da memória
- a muita memória -
do meu caderno encarnado

Slumberland II

Morning arrives with audacity. Anguish and light, spilling with disdain over anonymous objects. Dreams fading so quickly that I forget to write them down again. I stare at the notebook and try some words:

"morning arrives with audacity"

and I forget the rest.

I decide to follow my shadow back into the night, hoping that uncounciousness will feed my pen. To my surprise, darkness is a blaze. It could be the moon or just open shutters.
I reach my notebook and write, believing that I am actually writing on my notebook:

"morning arrives with audacity"

I don't seem to be getting too far so I open my eyes. There are two moons in the sky. Could be two bulbs on a ceiling but I swear it is two moons. One of them tells me there is no such thing as two moons. I don't believe her because moons cannot be trusted. I reach for my notebook and write:

"never trust a moon you have never seen before"

and then morning arrives.

with audacity.

Anachronisms

What would it be the best way to present a product from today's technology if you were to sell it in the 70's?

This the question posed by Alex Varanese, a San-Francisco based artist which has explored that idea in a series of works by re-imagining four common products from 2010 as if they were designed in 1977: an mp3 player, a laptop, a mobile phone and a handheld video game system.

Zeus and the Greek crisis

A day after Standard and Poor's slashed the debt rating on Greek bonds to junk status, Zeus held a press conference in which he admitted that things were getting out of hand under the rule of his son, Hermes.

Hermes is popularly known as the messenger god with the winged hat, but he is also the god of thieves. He holds the record as youngest felon in history, thanks to his remarkable heist of a herd of sacred cattle from elder sibling Apollo mere hours after he was born.

"We've been taking turns at the helm, you see; all part of this family counseling we've been going through," Zeus said while toying with a small lightning bolt in his left hand.

"Things were pretty good under Hephaestus," Zeus said, "got the country through the beginning of the Industrial Age quite nicely there. And Athena did all right in establishing national autonomy back in the 1830s. But Hermes... Hermes is another story entirely. I'm still not sure why I agreed to this in the first place."

Hermes, whose divine guidance is currently emanating from an undisclosed but extremely luxurious location, has insisted that everything is fine, really, and that he has a sure-fire plan to turn things around if people could only provide him with their bank account and social security numbers.

With most of the more competent Olympians either ineligible for a rotation in the driver's seat or otherwise unavailable - Athena emigrated to the United States nearly a century ago, and Hera has been on vacation since 1982 - Zeus is rapidly running out of options to deal with the fiscal legacy of his wayward son.

"Maybe it's time to give Dionysius a turn," mused the divine patriarch. "If ever the country needed to start drinking heavily, it's now."

jardim

caminhámos juntos sobre as estátuas
(descalços)
contemplámos as árvores nos pedestais
enquanto na alameda os cavalos decapitados
morriam dorsos nus
amámos muscularmente as pedras soerguidas

Hubble

As the Hubble Space Telescope achieves the major milestone of two decades on orbit, NASA released a stunning new picture.

This brand new Hubble photo is of a small portion of one of the largest known star-birth regions in the galaxy, the Carina Nebula. Towers of cool hydrogen laced with dust rise from the wall of the nebula. The image captures the top of a three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars.

material: time

Some people have a life project. This is it: take something immaterial and lock it in an Euclidean space. Repeat the process every day until it makes sense. Repeat it until infinity becomes bidimensional and you can frame it in your own frame of inhibitions. Repeat it until you're obssessed with the process itself and infinity is just a means and not the goal. It is the process that matters. This is the project. This is the project and it's absurd.

decomposition

Damn it ! it's monday again ! we've been counting the hours but in the meanwhile years have gone by and truth remained unbeaten in its territory. There are doubts: sure! There are hesitations. But inevitability dug trenches ahead of us: we are walking in spiral to something monstrous. We search comfort on centrifugal forces.

We want an end: answers, a centre, transcendence, metaphysics, all those absurd things which are no more than electric pulses on a no-less-absurd brain. We perpetuate ourselves and perpetuate the questions. Then come the philosophers and question the questions. Then come the sociologists and politicians and those that have learned from history and apply their lessons to experimentalism. And then experimentalism becomes history itself and we all learn from it.

galgar marés, no sentido ascendente do termo
F.U.G.A.
e a mim tudo aquilo me consumia imenso

onde as areias vêm morrer à margem
ao ritmo esquizofrénico das marés

No One Knows About Persian Cats

Special Jury Prize in the "Un Certain Regard" section at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, this is a film I strongly recommend.

From Iranian director Bahman Ghobad, the film portrays Tehran as a city with a vibrant underground indie rock scene (in a mixed fiction/ documentary format), and features a number of bands, playing from metal to rap, on a musical guided tour lead by the duo Negar and Ashkan from the band "Take It Easy Hospital".

The band asked for asylum in the UK last August and is living in London ever since.

In Geneva, the film is presently showing in the Scala cinemas. I Leave you with a teaser.

E agora a barba.

A wish for a dishwashing machine

I remember almost losing conciousness as I was reaching 5800m just after Gilman's point. As I advanced, sleepwalking, all I wished for was a clear view of the summit.

I remember crossing the M'Goun gorges, my legs immersed in the cold water of the M'Goun river. After a long day walking, all I wished for was my sleeping bag and a starry sky.

I remember sleeping under a tree, in the middle of the Sahara desert (yes, a tree!). I could see the heat waves distorting the landscape as I lifted my head from my mattress. All I wished for was a soft breeze.

I remember sitting above Kumbu glacier, at about 5200m. My head aching with the altitude, my hands freezing with the glacial wind. All I wished for was to stay there a bit longer.

Now I am standing here, in front of this pile of dirty dishes, and all I can wish for is a bloody dishwashing machine...

The white ribbon

This is Michael Haneke's best film, I read.

I cannot say much about that since it's my first Haneke film, but I can tell you that "The White Ribbon" is one of those films that will stay in your mind for a long while. And it will make you think about it.

A powerful, violent picture of the hypocrisy that often lies behind puritanism and the perverse effects of an education which represses all instincts and desires. But also a story of relentless men. Of fathers, husbands and lovers enforcing the rules that best serve their purposes. And of how violence and abuse is perpetuated.

The story is told in pre 1st war Germany, so many have connected the children in the film to the holocaust generation. But I think this is actually a very narrowing interpretation. Maybe that helps to reinforce the idea and maybe it was even what the director had in mind but if you think, this story could have been told anywhere. And at any time.

manhã

Aconteceu ontem.

Perdi muito tempo a analisar a minha própria infância e tornei-me insuportável.
